Real World Testing

The chart shows the kWh used by the heat pump to maintain the set point of 40°C. The test period is for a 10 month period between the 8th December 2022 and the 7th September 2023.

The total kWh used by the heat pump over this period was 749.55. Accoring to Ofgem, from the 1st October 2023, new kwh rate will be set at 27.35p. With this pricing structure, the cost of this 10 month period at the coming rate £205, equating to an average cost of just £20.50 a month.

  • The hot tub is located outdoors in Chichester, West Sussex, UK, and not under a gazebo or shelter. All figures are just relating to the heating.
  • The electric heater is disconnected so all heating is supplied by the heat pump only.
  • We are testing a Vian 7kW S7 Plus Air Source Heat Pump which is set to boost mode. The hot tub is a mid-specification model of approx 1,550L of water. The hot tub is set to heat to 40°C.
  • We have used an older cover for these tests that is slightly waterlogged (to mimic real world). The pipes to the heat pump are not insulated.
  • The heat pump is within 1 metre of the hot tub. The hot tub has economy cycles set as follows: Economy from 10.00pm to 10.00am, 7 days per week. Second Economy mode from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a hot tub heat pump work?

A hot tub heat pump draws in ambient air, uses refrigerant to absorb heat, compresses it to raise the temperature, and transfers that heat to your spa water via a heat exchanger. This highly efficient process allows you to heat your hot tub using significantly less electricity than a traditional electric heater.

EVI improves heating performance in extreme cold by injecting vapor into the compressor, increasing pressure and heat output. It’s ideal for UK winters.

WarmCore targets heat to the compressor and tray base, helping to prevent ice buildup and ensuring smooth operation in colder temperatures.

Hybrid Logic is a smart feature that combines the efficiency of the heat pump with the speed of a 3kW electric heater. When fast heating is needed—such as after water changes or during heavy use—the electric heater automatically kicks in to boost performance and reduce heating time.
This hybrid system ensures your hot tub or swim spa reaches the desired temperature faster, minimising downtime and maximising comfort, especially in settings like holiday lets or short-stay rentals where quick recovery is essential.

R32 is a low global warming potential refrigerant used in all Nexus models. It’s more efficient, eco-friendly, and helps reduce your environmental footprint.

COP stands for Coefficient of Performance and it measures how efficiently a heat pump converts electricity into heat. For example, a COP of 13 means the unit produces 13 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity used.

The higher the COP, the lower your energy bills, and the more eco-friendly your setup becomes.

Vian heat pumps are subjected to real world testing, more information of which can be found below. On average, customers reduce running costs by up to 70% compared to traditional electric heating—especially when used year-round.

No – the Vian air source heat pumps are powered directly from your hot tub or swim spa, so no additional electrical installation is required.

In most cases, yes. A heat pump can be integrated with the majority of hot tubs and swim spas. Our team offers a free site survey for local clients to assess compatibility, check installation requirements, and recommend the best solution for your setup. Whether you’re retrofitting an existing spa or adding a heat pump to a new one, we can advise on the most effective approach.

A minimum of 450mm inlet space and 1500mm fan outlet clearance is recommended for optimal performance and airflow.

Generally, no. However, installation must meet space and ventilation guidelines—our team can advise during the site survey.

All models are designed for year-round use, including during freezing winter temperatures. In fact, models like the Nexus EVO 6 and Nexus 7 EVI are built for extreme climates and continue to operate efficiently at -20°C to -25°C.

We offer:

  • 2 Years – Whole Product
  • 3 Years – Fan, Motor, and Heat Exchanger
  • 5 Years – Compressor
